Our skin clinic allows our Pharmacist to prescribe certain medications on a private basis for the following conditions;

  • Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point in their lives and can have a detrimental impact on self-confidence and body image.

  • Cold sore

Cold sores are small blisters that develop on the lips or around the mouth, caused by the herpes simplex virus. They often start with a tingling, itching or burning sensation around the mouth, then small fluid-filled sores appear (usually on the edges of the lower lip).

  • Dermatitis

Dermatitis is a common skin condition and while patients might already purchase non-prescription treatments in the pharmacy, pharmacists can run a more comprehensive dermatitis service and when appropriate offer betamethasone steroid cream, which provides a stronger potency compared to over the counter hydrocortisone preparations.

  • Facial hair removal

Facial hirsutism is excessive facial hair growth affecting women. It’s relatively common, although some women may find it embarrassing or distressing to live with.

  • Fungal infection

Ringworm and athlete’s foot are common fungal skin infections but are easily treated. Anyone can get them, but they’re especially common in children and young adults.

  • Hives

Chronic idiopathic urticaria (Hives) is a common condition and sufferers often present in pharmacy looking for over the counter treatments. Trained pharmacists can run a more comprehensive service which widens the options available to patients to include fexofenadine hydrochloride or hydroxyzine hydrochloride where appropriate.

  • Impetigo

Impetigo is a skin infection that’s very contagious but not usually serious and often gets better in 7 to 10 days with treatment. Anyone can get it, but it’s very common in young children.

  • Plaque psoriasis

Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis, accounting for about 80-90% of cases. Its symptoms are dry red skin lesions, known as plaques, covered in silver scales. They normally appear on patient’s elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but can appear anywhere on their body.

  • Rosacea

Rosacea is a common and relapsing long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face. The change in physical appearance caused by rosacea can have a significant psychological impact on patients.

  • Scalp psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis can occur on parts of the scalp or on the whole scalp. It causes red patches of skin covered in thick, silvery-white scales. Some people find scalp psoriasis extremely itchy, while others have no discomfort. In extreme cases, it can cause hair loss, although this is usually only temporary.

  • Thrush

Thrush is a very common yeast infection of the vagina which can cause irritation.

Please be aware that we can only provide certain medications for patients who fall into a specific patient direction and criteria will need to be met. For those eligible, treatments can be provided same day via a private prescription and will save you making an appointment with the GP.
